With the mighty Pacific Ocean at its shores, it’s obvious Peru has an abundance of seafood. However, it’s not just that. The Peruvian culinary arts are enriched with a great variety of dishes. So, which dishes should you try in Peru? Let’s find out!

Ceviche

The national dish of Peru, Ceviche is a raw fish marinated in citrus juice. It then gets spiced up with aji pepper and red onions. Mainly a lunch dish, the fish gets served with sweet potato or choclo. You can also drink the citrus marinades which are known as tiger’s milk, or leche de Tigre.

Lomo Saltado

A fusion of Chinese and Peruvian cooking, Lomo Soltado is a dish prepared by stir-frying a mix of beef, potatoes, peppers, onions, tomatoes with soy sauce. Then it gets served with a bowl of white rice.

Cuy al Horno

This is a guinea pig stuffed with herbs. The pig is usually baked or barbecued and gets served as a wholesome. It is such an important dish in Peru that it made its way into a replica of ‘the last supper’ that hangs in front of a Cusco cathedral.

Rocoto Relleno

Rocoto is a pepper, ten times hotter than jalapeño. This dish is basically a Rocoto stuffed with spiced beef and veggies, and then baked with white cheese toppings. Veggies can also be exchanged with hard-boiled eggs.

Alfajor

The favorite cookie of the South America is usually made with caramel sandwiched between two thin cookies covered with powdered sugar or coconut flakes. It's great to carry as a snack while hiking up the mountains to reach Machu Picchu.
