N
o need to tell you how annoying ingrown hairs can be. They happen when 'hairs have curled round and grown back into the skin' and this can lead to red, itchy spots and whiteheads. Here is how to get rid of them.
What are ingrown hairs?
Ingrown hairs are also commonly referred to as razor bumps; they occur when instead of the hair growing outwards and coming through the skin as it is supposed to, it curls around and grows back into the skin. Even something as simple as clogged hair follicles can cause hair to grow back into the skin. And you probably know shaving doesn’t always help. But good news, there’s a way to shave without getting ingrown hairs.
People with lighter skin complexion, very curly or thick hair, are more susceptible to ingrown hairs. Waxing, shaving and epilating are also common causes of ingrown hairs.
How to prevent ingrown hairs
There are several techniques and practices you can employ to help you stay smooth and say goodbye to ingrown hairs.
Exfoliate often
An ingrown hair can occur when the hair follicle becomes clogged with dead skin cells. Regular exfoliation will help prevent that build up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.
Prep your skin before shaving
The night before a shave, oil your hair or use anything else that will help add hydration and assist the razor in sliding smoothly over hair. Also, make sure you use a lubricant to make the hair pliant and bolster the skin against the razor.
Treat your skin after shaving
Rinsing and treating the skin afterward tightens the skin pores hence creating a smooth path for new hair and preventing ingrown hairs.
