Ask anyone, and they’ll tell you the iPhone X is expensive. It is, hands down, the most expensive phone Apple has ever released. Tipping the scales at a mighty £999 flat, or £47.50 a month for 24 months (£1,140 all together), you may find it hard to justify the purchase to yourself.
However, not everything is as it seems. What if I told you that your daily coffee could actually be costing you more in the long run? If you, like millions of others, pick up a coffee (or two) throughout your day, you may ultimately be spending more than what the iPhone costs. If each cup costs an average of £3, and you buy one 5 days of the week, that works out at £60 a month. If you buy one 7 days a week, that works out at £84 a month. Throw in a croissant or a sandwich, and it quickly adds up.
Then we take the lifetime into account. The average smartphone owner keeps their phone for about 23 months, just shy of two years, before upgrading. A coffee is gone within minutes, but your phone is still usable two years after purchase, barring any unfortunate accidents. And that's just the iPhone X, if you opt for the cheaper iPhone 8 or 6, it works out as even cheaper.
Apple also has trade-in and upgrade options, making it even cheaper and easier to get a new phone. Right now, you may be able to get up to £440 in credit towards a new iPhone, by trading in your old phone. You also have the iPhone upgrade program, possible the best way to buy the iPhone X. It's a 24-month installment loan with 0% interest, and includes AppleCare. This breaks down the phone and the insurance plan into 24 equal payments, and after at least six months and 12 payments, you can trade in your current phone and upgrade to a newer model, if you wish. Or you can make all 24 payments, and keep the phone, free and clear. With the iPhone X, this starts at £47.50.
Once you take the costs into account, and change your perspective on your spending habits, you could quickly find easy places to make savings. By maybe cutting into your coffee habit, the new iPhone x might work out cheaper than you expected.
