he Champions League is the most popular football club competition in the world. In recent years, it’s popularity has attracted important investors. In a short period, the investments have made teams such as PSG, Manchester City and Chelsea challengers for the trophy. But who are the teams that have the longest tradition of winning the prestigious competition?
Real Madrid are by far the biggest winners in international club football. Los Blancos has won the Champions League (or Champions Cup as it was previously known) an astonishing twelve times. Most recently Real won the Champions League twice in a row in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 campaigns, the only team to do so in the new era of the Champions League. Football legends such as Alfredo Di Stéfano, Zinedine Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo have been among players to win the trophy for Real.
AC Milan is second in terms of Champions League trophies, with seven wins. Their most recent victory came in 2007, when Filippo Inzaghi scored twice for the Italian to secure them the victory over Liverpool.
Speaking of Liverpool, the Premier League legends are in third on our list, having won the trophy five times. They are tied with two other football heavyweights, Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona, who have also been victorious in the competition on five occasions.
Ajax Amsterdam have won four trophies. Three of these were won in the 1970’s by a stellar team which featured one of football’s greatest players, Johan Cruyff.
Since its beginning in 1955 and until the present day, The Champions League has been synonymous with club success in football. The competition remains one of the most highly viewed sporting events on the planet.
