G etting a certification is a basic, but important step in learning about driving a forklift safely and efficiently. Employers are more likely to hire a certified person as it assures them of your efficiency and productivity. So let’s find out how to get forklift certified.

Choose a Forklift to Operate

There are a few different types of forklifts, with different training and certification needs. So identify the forklift that you would like to operate.

Get Admitted to a Training Centre

There are many accredited forklift training centres in the UK. Do your research and get enrolled in one of their training programs.

Attend the Classes

Forklift certification usually requires you to pass two tests – written and practical. Attending the classes regularly is essential to pass the written test.

Complete the Practical Test

This is where you get to drive your chosen forklift under the guidance of an instructor. You have to fulfil all the instructions in order to pass the practical test.

Get Your Certification

Once you pass both the tests, the trainer or the training centre will provide you with a certificate. This is your ticket to a rewarding job.

Accrediting Organizations

Only six organizations in the UK are acknowledged by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) – the regulatory authority. Those organizations are:
  • Construction Industry Training Board (CITB)
  • National Plant Operators Registration Scheme Ltd.
  • Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB) Ltd.
  • Association of Industrial Truck Trainers (AITT)
  • Lantra Awards
  • Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSAR)
Each of them has their own syllabus and provides accreditation to training centres and the trainers.
