Football Weekly Voted Winner of the Podcast/Radio Show of the Year
It’s off the cuff, irreverent and at times downright off topic. The Guardian’s Football Weekly was voted winner of the radio show/podcast of the year this year by the Football Supporters’ Federation.
The show boasts a mix of talent and voices, from the Guardian’s own staff (including host James Richardson and Barry Glendenning) to other major International and European Football journalists (such as France Football’s Philippe Auclair, Spanish correspondent Sid Lowe, Süddeutsche Zeitung’s Raphael Honigstein and the Italian Paolo Bandini).
The show, which airs weekly (on Mondays), focuses heavily on European football, especially the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga, offering news, keeping you up-to-date and hearing views about certain players or matches.
And, of course, it can be wildly entertaining. Barry Glendenning, especially, can be brilliantly insightful and witty, while James Richardson is the king of the pun.
But what may make the show truly great, is its large rotating cast of outside voices, which give a new energy and angle to each episode. Week in and week out, you’ll get the chance to hear perspectives from as far away as Brazil and Argentina on European league matches and players.
If anything, Football Weekly should be credited for making football a more international affair, shifting focus away from national teams and leagues and towards new styles of play.
